Ed Benguiat

Our relationship with Ed Benguiat started way before we knew it—his work as a lettering artist and type designer has firmly left a footprint in the minds of anyone who has read a magazine, watched a movie or shopped in a grocery store over the last five decades. His work includes such icons as the Planet of the Apes poster lettering, the SuperFly logo and the thousands of alphabets he drew in his tenure at longtime New York typehouse Photo-Lettering, Inc. Our collaboration started with an interview that appeared in the second issue of House Industries magazine and culminated in our release of the Ed Benguiat font collection. We picked five of Benguiat’s Photo-Lettering alphabets, broke them down to pencil sketches, pushed the limits of typographic technology and created some of the best display typefaces available. The Ed Benguiat collection is not about dredging up and repeating history—but of establishing a historical context on which to develop a visual statement that is valid in any era.
