Rank and file members of the House Industries staff are continuously admonished by type department members about the proper use of the terms font, typography and lettering. This shirt runs the gamut of terminological triple entendres by displaying pure lettering, fonts programmed to act like lettering and lettering that looks like typography. For a greater understanding of these terms and the profound cultural impact of their improper usage, we recommend thoroughly studying several tomes including Bringhurst’s Elements of Typographic Style or simply wearing this shirt as some sort of undergarment to prevent the inevitable conversation that might go something like this: “What font is that?” “It’s not a font.” “What is it?” “That’s lettering.” “Okay.” “What’s this one.” “That’s sort of a font, but I’m not supposed to call it that because it’s going to be part of our new Photo-Lettering system.” “Oh. So the scripty one on the bottom. That’s lettering then.” “No, it’s a font that’s designed to look like lettering.” “Excuse me, I just saw somebody who looks more interesting than you. It’s been nice chatting.”
