Modern vehicles rarely provide an opportunity to wipe oily or greasy things on a purpose-designed cloth rag. Bushings are self lubricating, transmissions contain high-tech synthetic fluids and engines are built to such close tolerances that they’re not burning any oil unless you have somehow defeated the fuel shutoff and bounce it off the rev limiter at every shift. Greasy opportunities still abound, however: Consider the bits of dirt that combine with bicycle chain lubricant to make a black slimy mess or the food and drink sludge that forms under your kid’s car booster seat. You needn’t own antiquated automotive technology or decades old lawn equipment to find countless ways to enjoy these rags as a part of your daily toil. They might make interesting dinner napkins for guests who don’t mind a few pieces of lint in their pumpkin mushroom soup and also would work great for one of those little pads that you put under potted plants and lamps.
