Eesti Kalligraafia

During my visit to Helsinki for the annual ATypI congress last fall, I decided to visit Estonia since it’s only a 90 minute booze cruise across the gulf to the capital city of Tallinn. On my way to the town’s medieval center, I stumbled upon a small bookstore and found a few gems on Estonian calligraphy and Cyrillic lettering (remember, Estonia was behind the iron curtain for 50 years). Here’s a spread from one such find, a survey of twentieth century Estonian letterers.
