When Erik van Blokland asked me to letter a certificate to be presented to my friend and colleague Tal Leming at the 2012 Robothon conference, I was honored to oblige. A key contributor to the UFO font data storage format, Tal was awarded the title Benevolent Dictator for Life by his peers and added to a growing list of esteemed software developers.

During my lettering workshop at Gestalten Space last October, my hosts rolled out the red carpet…and a few reels of film for this interview. Danke!

What started as a half-baked idea and a few late night scribbles back in 2006 ultimately grew into the full-figured yet confident Smidgen. I drew inspiration for the face from a couple of automotive lettering specimens by Dennis Jones and an unidentified artist spotted in an old vanning culture book courtesy of Mister Jalopy. With only a handful of letters serving as creative influence, I hashed out a complete character set in pencil before making the vector scene. I also developed a drop shadow version to give a nod to Smidgen’s roots. You’ll have to manually layer the drop shadow version in a drawing program, or we’ll do the work for you at photolettering.com. Smidgen’s generous proportions artfully juxtapose supple starkness with robust sensitivity to afford even the most casual user an intense typographic experience.
