Workshop Visitor Guide

If your search engine hand is strong, you might be able to do better than this.

Location
Here we are. If you’re using a GPS, Google app on a mobile phone or other device, use 19707 as the zip code and Hockessin as the town or it will take you somewhere that is not here.

Transportation
Hate to admit it, but it’s hard to get here without some sort of motorized transport.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): 40 minutes by car, a ridiculous amount of time any other way

Wilmington, Delaware Train Station: 20 minutes by car. Served by the Acela and fast NE Corridor Amtrak trains, SEPTA and a ragged band of taxis.

Bicycle: If you ride your bicycle, we’ll give you a free hat

Über might get you here, but they might not get you back. Then you’ll have to ride on the back of Rich’s motorcycle. We do not recommend that.

Communication
Yorklyn is generally a mobile phone dead zone, so you might want to give anyone who might need to contact you our landline number: 302-234-2356 or 800-888-4390 (does anyone care about toll-free numbers anymore? Why do we have one? We don’t know. Maybe if you get lost and your mobile is dead and you have to call from a pay phone. Wait…). WIFI is also available in the classroom. Your mobile will probably work if you walk around the parking lot holding it up like an antenna until you get two bars.

Food
Plenty of free cold drinks, water, coffee, snacks, dried-meat-based energy bars, Bobo’s gluten free brownies and tea will be available. We bring in lunch for you so you have time to browse the House Industries store because we’re capitalists. Then we bring in some epic cheese plates, wine and beer at 5:30 so you can bask in the afterglow of your newfound knowledge. And because Ken likes cheese.

Lodging
Best Western Brandywine Valley: An easy drive through suburbia

Lots of chain hotels: They all seem nice in that hospitality chain sort of a way with fluffy robes and all. Come to think of it, if you stay at one of these places please steal a medium fluffy hypoallergenic pillow or two. It’s a nice drive through the valley to the studio if you know the way.

If the boss is paying and doesn’t look at the expense reports: Fairville Inn, Mendenhall Inn. The question is why do they all use the same hot rock spa treatment stock photo?

Don’t stay at the Montchanin Inn. If you do, don’t eat at Krazy Kats. It’s pretty bad.

Eating Out
All of the food around us Hockessin sort of tastes the same, so here are some other offbeat suggestions that you might not otherwise try.

Talulas Table: They book a year in advance for dinner. Go for lunch, sit at the communal table.

La Michoacana Taco Shop, 201 S. Union St., Kennett Square, PA – Authentic taco shop, fast, cheap, good.

Okura – Strip mall sushi. Be careful, they tend to undercook the fish.

The Whip Tavern – A really pretty drive through Chester County horse country.

Harry’s Seafood Grill – Kind of pricey, but always good. Walk from the Wilmington Train Station. Your train is late anyway.

Attractions
Check ‘em out. Sorry, you meant local attractions. Okay:

Oak Knoll Books – Unlock the secrets of type design one smelly old book at a time

Longwood Gardens – World-renowned flora.

Winterthur – Old money crazy beautifully preserved

Hagley – The Brandywine River culminates at the birthplace of the American industrial revolution. See how they ground saltpeter and blew up the occasional donkey.

Brandywine Museum – NC, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth live(d) just up the road when they weren’t in Maine. This place has lots of their paintings. Also tour Andrew’s Wyeth’s studio a few miles north on Route 100.

The Barnes Foundation – A doctor made a fortune in baby eyedrops and bought lots of art. Lots. Worth the trip to Philly.

Baldwin’s Book Barn – More smelly books, not quite as well organized as Oak Knoll

The Mutter Museum – See the world’s largest colon.

The Rosenbach Museum – Rosenbach and Sendak were buddies, so Sendak painted his walls. The Sendaks want the paintings back, but they are permanently attached to the building.

Shopping
Considering our global economy, there’s not much here that you can’t get everywhere else. Delaware is, however, the home of tax free shopping so it might be a good time to pick up a set of Enve carbon clinchers at Garrison’s Cyclery in Centerville. You can also line up at the Christiana Mall Apple store and buy up to 10 iPads, take them home, and make a few bucks splitting the sales tax with your friends. That might be illegal, though.
